This model first appeared in the Palmer catalog in 1940/41, where it was listed as a stationary engine. At that time, Palmer catalogs listed diesel engines in three sizes, 1-cyl, 9 hp, 1000 rpm; 4-cyl, 40 hp, 1200 rpm & 6-cyl, 60 hp, 1200 rpm. All three sizes were considered as four-cycle engines. The nameplate on this engine has the horsepower shown as a 7 placed above a 9, but not expressed as a fraction. This engine likely has a nominal rating of 9 hp at 1000 rpm. According to e-mail, Richard Day to George King, dated 1 May 2001, although manufactured by Palmer Bros., this engine used a design obtained from the UK based Russel Newberry & Co., Ltd, a company producing internal combustion engines since 1909
