Engine Builder: Lathrop & Co., Mystic, CT |
Make: J.W. Lathrop & Co.
Engine Type: Gasoline
Production Date: c. 1920
Engine Design: Two-Stroke
Overall Condition: Good
Rebuilt/Restored: Over Restored
Remarks: Complete with propeller, shaft, stuffing box and muffler. In running condition. Engine horse power confirmed in Mill as 3.0, originally mislabeled as 8.0 hp. Our 1925 Lathrop two-cycle marine engine catalog does not list a 3 HP ,one-cylinder "Light" model, only a 3 HP, one-cylinder "Standard" model. The "Standard" model at 175 Lbs., is rated for 3 HP at 500 rpm with a 4" bore and a 4" stroke. Most likely what we have is a "Standard" rather than a "Light" model. That catalog offers the two-cycle, one-cylinder "Light" models in only the 6 and 12 HP sizes. Engine has a removable head, make and break ignition and an elaborate oilier. Original carburetor missing when engine arrived, but now has Schebler carburetor installed after 1994 restoration. Engine folder contains a multi-page report on it's 1994 restoration. Engine is apparently 3 HP, rather than 8 HP as recorded in the Registrar's Office 10/20/05.
