This collection contains 3 volumes, miscellaneous papers, a short transcription, a magazine article, and photocopies. One volume is a log for Olsen's voyage on the GEORG STAGE, one volume is a log for Olsen's voyage on the THETIS, and one volume holds the logs for his voyages on the WILLIAM P. FRYE, the SLESVIG, and the LORENA, and also includes sea chanties. The logs are written predominantly in Danish. A few passages, such as the sea chanties, are in English. The papers include a story about a wrecked ship called the GOLDEN HORN, written in English, and 3 other miscellaneous pages written in Danish that appear to be a letter. The short translation and transcription is of the first 11 entries from the GEORG STAGE log. The photocopies are of all pages in the collection. The magazine article is titled "Of a Danish Ship, American Cadets and a Son Remembered" from Burgee Magazine, November 1990. |

Jens Peter Olsen was a sailor from Denmark born on June 8, 1883. During the period covered by this collection he was a sailor on the training ship GEORG STAGE (1898), the THETIS (1901), the SLESVIG (1903), the WILLIAM P. FRYE (1903-1904) and the LORENA (1905). The GEORG STAGE was a Danish training ship for boys between the ages of 15-18 and Olsen was 15 when he sailed on the ship. Olsen died on December 15, 1933 after being struck by a hit and run driver.

The Jens Peter Olsen Collection consists of 6 logbooks that he kept himself. The logbooks contain the day to day happenings of a training voyage and other types of voyages in the early 20th century and are all written in Danish. He records the length of each voyage, vessels spoke, and ports of entry visited. He also describes a meeting with the Crown Prince and Princess of Denmark during his voyage on the GEORG STAGE. In addition to his logbooks there is a magazine article describing the history of the GEORG STAGE, a two page translation and transcription of the first 11 entries in the GEORG STAGE log from Danish to English, a story about a ship called the GOLDEN HORN that wrecks on its way back to England from Port au Prince, 3 pages written in Danish that appear to be a letter, and photocopies of everything in the collection.
