Abstract: Family correspondence, ships’ papers, and printed documents of the Latham family of Phoenixville Connecticut. Correspondence primarily between Captain Lorenzo (Jack) Latham,and his wife and children while he commanded the POINSETT (Brig), COMET (Steamship), FRANK PALMER (Schooner) and the ALBERT SHULTZ (Bark). Documents include his marriage certificate and several papers concerning the purchase, trade and sale of the ALBERT SHULTZ. The collection also includes correspondence between extended members and later generations of the family.

Biography of the Latham Family

The Latham family consisted of Captain Lorenzo (Jack) Latham; his wife Mary Ann Squire; and his children, Cora, Roy and Caro who lived in Phoenixville, Connecticut; as well as Captain Latham’s brothers, parents and descendants. Lorenzo Latham commanded several vessels including the POINSETT (Brig), COMET (Steamship), FRANK PALMER (Schooner) and the ALBERT SHULTZ (Barkentine). Captain Latham spent the final years of his life as a gatekeeper at Sailors’ Snug Harbor in New York.
