Biography of Samuel Ward

Samuel Ward was a Rhode Island merchant and Lieut. Colonel, First Rhode Island Regiment. Born in Westerly, Rhode Island in 1756, Ward graduated from Brown University in Providence in 1771. Capt Ward accompanied Benedict Arnold in the attack on Quebec and was aid-de-camp to General Washington and rose to Lieut. Colonel in the First Rhode Island Regiment. He also became a distinguished merchant, settling first in New York and then East Greenwich, Rhode Island where he died in 1832.

The collection contains especially notable correspondence regarding rising tensions between the United States and Britain. In 1806 one of Ward's ships, the John Jay, was condemned in Bermuda by the British in 1806 as "enemy property as the the cargo of an illegal voyage." (Box 2/7)

Ward's father, also Samuel Ward, was the governor of Rhode Island and his brother Richard briefly ran a New York city merchantile concern in partership with Samuel. His wife, Phebe Ward was the daughter of William Greene of Warwick.
