Eliza T. Edwards was a member of the Wheeler family of Sag Harbor , New York. In 1857
she left her home to live in the Hawaiian Islands while her husband, Captain Eli H. Edwards,
hunted whales in the Okhotsk Sea. During her stay Eliza wrote many descriptive letters to her
mother, brother, sister, and husband. The Edwards returned to Sag Harbor in 1860, where Eliza
apparently lived for the remained of her life. Captain Eli H. Edwards died in 1864 in an army
hospital in Lexington, Kentucky.
