Coll. 237 |
Stephen Smith was born and raised in New Bedford, Massachusetts. His father Abraham
(1747-1826), the patriarch of this Quaker family, was a blacksmith and postmaster
Sometime around 1797 young Stephen went to New York city to begin a career in business.
Indications are that he may have been in partnership for a brief time under the name Smith &
Champlin, but soon after 1800 he joined Minturn & Champlin, a New York merchant and
shipping firm. Most of the records in this collection detail Smith's activities between 1800-1816,
a period when he traveled extensively, frequently as supercargo, representing the interest of
Minturn & Champlin in ports such as Liverpool, London, Canton, Manila, Lisbon, Cadiz, and
Marseilles.
By 1820, Smith had moved to Syracuse, New York with his wife and children. He left the
shipping business, and with support from New Bedford investors, he created the Onandaga Solar
Salt Co. (1821). The papers offer little insight into this enterprise, but rather provides a look at
Stephen Smith's family. There are many letters between Stephen and several of his 18 brothers
and sister; especially brothers Obediah (a ship master), Elihu, Isaac, sister Mary, and his father
Abraham.

The Stephen Smith Papers contain approximately 150 pieces; i.e. manuscript letters,
business accounts, genealogical research and newspaper clippings, all organized chronologically
and filed into one document box.
The first 14 folders contain business correspondence and a few accounts relative to Stephen
Smith's activities as a representative of Minturn & Champlin, New York shipping
merchants. He often traveled to various ports in Europe, the Mediterranean, and the Far East.
Several vessels and cargoes are mentioned, and during the War of 1812, several letters appear to
have been written in code.
Miscellaneous business and family papers, ca. 1820-1859, are found in folders 15-23.
Included are references to shipping salt and china ware, numerous school reports and essays by
children, and letters between Smith family member. Folder 24 contains newspaper clippings, ca.
1850-1900, relative to the history of the Smith family.
All pieces in this collection are considered to be in poor to fair condition, and must be
handled with care. Photocopying is prohibited.
