Clarence H. Rayer lived in Stony Brook, N. Y., and during the period covered by these
papers, he commanded several coasting schooners. He was master of the schooner E. H.
BRAZAS, which was lost in a storm off the New Jersey coast on October 31, 1877. In 1978 he
commanded the Schooner QUICKSTEP, carrying coal from New York to Middletown, CT.
Between 1894 and 1903 he purchased controlling interest in three schooners; the BENJAMIN
ENGLISH (4/16), the B.H. WARFORD (31/32), and the LILLIE O. WELLS (16/16). The
WELLS was lost during a storm on Long Island Sound a few months later. Rayner later
commanded the coal schooner HAMLET in 1913-1914
