Abstract: This collection contains approximately 125 pieces and 6 notebooks, kept and compiled by Commodore Percy Chubb II, of the N.Y.Y.C. from 1962 through 1974. These papers are relative primarily to the America’s Cup trial races, i.e., the observation trials and the final trials, and consists of sailing instructions for these races, crew lists, and race data sheets containing mark times and the order of finish for each trial race. The notebooks were evidently kept by Mr. Chubb, and contain his brief notes on these races as a member of the America’s Cup Committee. In addition, there are booklets entitled “Conditions Governing the Races for the America’s Cup”, and “Sailing Instructions” for Cup races, as well as menus, programs, and other ephemera.

Biography of Percy Chubb (1909-1982)

Percy Chubb II (1909-1982) was Commodore of the New York Yacht Club from 1967 through 1968. He was also a member of the America’s Cup Committee for many years, and it was in this capacity that he compiled the papers that make up this collection. Born in East Orange, N. J., Mr. Chubb graduated from Yale in 1931, and was the “Son” in the insurance firm of Chubb & Son. He later became Chairman of the firm, and was also a director of various companies, including the First National City Bank of New York, and the New Jersey Bell Telephone Co. He was President of the Victoria Foundation, as well as a Trustee of Mystic Seaport Museum.
