Abstract:

The collection consists
of seven business record books. Included are one volume containing invoices of cargo shipped
and accounts of cargo sold, and several cash and sales journals recording cash paid and received
during this period. |

Whitney, Cushing & Company was a Boston shipping firm headed by James E. Whitney and
Lawrence B. Cushing. By the 1880s the partnership had ended and Whitney continued in
business on his own. The record book indicates the firm carried on a large and active trade
between Boston and Culcutta, India.
