John Phillips (1867-1947) was a ship master from Sag Harbor, New York during the first
two decades of the 20th century. Between 1899 and 1920 he was master of the Schooners Lizzie
V. Hall, Estelle, Carrie A. Lane, and Florence B. Phillips.
Captain Phillips was also managing owner of these vessels. He kept a controlling interest
and sold shares to investors in and around Sag Harbor. A typical arrangement saw Phillips, as
captain, agent, and manager, receiving 52% of the gross freights after port charges, out of which
the crew's wages were paid. From the investor's shares all maintenance, repairs, and insurance
would be deducted, and the balance then distributed, usually in 64th shares, to the owners. All
four of Phillips' Schooners returned handsome profits to their investors, and he retired from the
sea after selling the Florence B. Phillips in March, 1920.
