BOWERS and the RAPHAEL, reflecting transactions in Liverpool, Cape Town, Padang, Cardiff,
Montevideo, Valparaiso, Swatow, London, Batavia, and Amsterdam. |

Edward W. Harkness was born August 9, 1837 in Camden, Maine. He was the son of Robert Harkenss and Deborah Wallace Thorndike. He married a woman by the name of Francena (Fannie, last name unknown) and had three sons, Charles R. Harkness (b. 1869), George E. Harkness (b. 1872), and Arthur E. Harness (b. 1880). By 1870 he is listed in the federal census as a master mariner living in Camden, and was master of the bark J.H. BOWERS and the ship RAPHAEL. By 1900 he was living in Walpole, Massachusetts, and is last listed on the 1920 census at 82 years of age.
