The Kermit family were a mercantile family of New York, N.Y. The collection reflects
for the most part the business activity of Captain Henry Kermit (d. 1813), and his two
sons, Henry and Robert Kermit, all of New York City. Captain Kermit's wife, Eliza, and
another son, Thomas, are also represented in this collection. Captain Henry Kermit was a
ship master and merchant businessman and his sons, Henry and Robert were merchants
and shipowners. Robert Kermit is best remembered as the managing owner of the Red
Star Line of Liverpool packets, which he purchased in 1836.
