Abstract: The collection consists of accounts, bills, receipts, bills of lading, promissory notes and correspondence contained in 20 file folders. There are also 14 volumes including account books, ledgers, and other various record books, detailing the business activities of Jesse, Jacob, Cyrus, and Charles Hurd. This material contains information on crews wages, cargoes, lumber, store accounts, shipyard business, personal accounts, ropewalk accounts, and shipbuilding activity.

Biography of Jesse Hurd

Jesse Hurd (1760-1831) was a shipbuilder, merchant, distiller, state legislator, and shipowner from Chatham, Connecticut, which was renamed East Hampton in 1915, during the early years of the 19th century. He was the son of Jacob Hurd Jr. (d. 1811), and married Drusilla Dart in 1788. Their children were Laura, Jesse, Charles, Drusilla, Cyrus, Nelson, Lavina, and Henry.
