Randall, Charles Henry. Letters, 1849, to his family in Providence, Rhode Island describing his voyage from New York, New York to San Francisco, California in the ship Samoset under the command of Captain Louis G. Hollis. Bancroft Library, University of California, Berkeley, California, # 68/40 c.

Randall, William Edgar. Journal, November 22, 1849-May 5, 1850, of a voyage from Boston, Massachusetts to San Francisco, California in the ship Hannibal under the command of Captain G. H. Willis. Bancroft Library, University of California, Berkeley, California, # C-F 82. The library has both the original and a carbon typescript. The J. Porter Shaw Library at the National Maritime Museum in San Francisco has a photocopy. Passengers were housed in three locations--after cabin known as Revere House, forward cabin known as the Montgomery House, and between decks known as the United States Hotel. Contains lists of passengers in each area. Randall was seasick during much of the voyage. Sometimes his wife Sara wrote the entries. She also provided part of the list of passengers.

Randle, John T. Letters, 1849-1850, to his family prior to sailing from New York, New York to San Francisco, California, during the voyage, and after arriving in the bark Belvidera under the command of Captain Samuel Barney. Bancroft Library, University of California, Berkeley, California, # C-B 854. Rundle appears to have been a member of the Cayuga Joint Stock Company. Only two of the four letters were written during and deal with the voyage.

Reed, William F. Journal, February 8, 1849-August 28, 1849, of a voyage from New Bedford, Massachusetts to San Francisco, California in the ship Magnolia under the command of Captain Benjamin Frank Simmons. Bancroft Library, University of California, Berkeley, California, # C-F 214. Reed was a member of the crew rather than a passenger. The journal continues to April 3, 1853 and contains records of experiences in the mines. Includes lists of cabin and steerage passengers and officers and crew giving the places of residence of each person. There were thirty-seven passengers in the cabin and fifty-seven in steerage.

Reid, Thomas. Journal, February 14-October 17, 1849, of a voyage from Boston, Massachusetts to San Francisco, California in the bark Velasco under the command of Captain E. B. Morgan. Bancroft Library, University of California, Berkeley, California, # C-F 146. Passengers were members of the Naragansett Association. Includes a list of twenty-seven of the eighty-five members. The members voted to sell the vessel in Talcahuano and later to dissolve the association.

Reynolds, Benjamin Franklin. Reminiscences, undated. Bancroft Library, University of California, Berkeley, California, # C-D 5118. Compiled in 1939 by Mattie V. Reynolds. Contains recollections of his 1849 voyage from Richmond, Virginia to San Francisco, California in the ship Glenmore.

Richardson, Joel. Journal, November 1, 1849-April 28, 1850, of a voyage from Bangor, Maine to San Francisco, California in the bark Cantero under the command of Captain Joseph Saunders. California State Library, Sacramento, California and California Historical Society, San Francisco, California both have typescript copies. Contains a list of the fifty-five members of the Bangor Trading and Mining Company with places of residence, a list of other passengers with places of residence, and list of passengers taken on at Valparaiso with places of residence. Most entries provide primarily daily weather and courses sailed.

Rix, Timothy. Biography, 1872. Bancroft Library, University of California, Berkeley, California, # C-D 277. Includes information about his membership in the company which purchased the ship Edward Everett and sailed her to San Francisco in 1849 and about the voyage around Cape Horn. The 151 members of the Boston and California Mining and Trading Joint Stock Company owned the ship.
