La Motte Family. Letters, 1849-1872. Bancroft Library, University of California, Berkeley, California. # C-B 450. The library has both original letters and typescript copies. Six of the letters by Robert and Harry La Motte to their family contain details of their voyage from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to San Francisco, California in the bark Maria under the command of Captain John J. Mattison. At least two of the letters are in journal form and contain entries for several days.

Leonard, Albert. Statement and Papers, 1888-1892. Bancroft Library, University of California, Berkeley, California, # C-D 793. Includes a dictation by William J. Kerr for H. H. Bancroft concerning Leonard's voyage from New York, New York to San Francisco, California in the bark Strafford. Makes mention of the company of 100 who purchased the vessel. States that approximately half of them worked together until March, 1850 when they dissolved their company and sold the vessel.

Lewis, Samuel C. Journal, March 4-September 16, 1849, of a voyage from Boston, Massachusetts to San Francisco, California in the ship Charlotte under the command of Captain Richard F. Savory. Bancroft Library, University of California, Berkeley, California, # 77/154 c. The journal was started during February, 1849 and continued to April, 1850. Early entries contain information on preparations for the voyage. Contains lists of seventeen cabin and 116 steerage passengers giving the places of residence and occupations of each individual. Also includes a list of all of his outfits for the voyage and the price he paid for each item.

Locke, Jonathan Frost. Journal, March 8-October 19, 1849, of a voyage from Boston, Massachusetts to San Francisco, California in the brig Sea Eagle under the command of Captain Hammond. Bancroft Library, University of California, Berkeley, California, # C-D 608. Journal ends shortly before they arrived in San Francisco. At least one leaf torn out following the entry of October 29, 1849.

Locke, Jonathan Frost. Letters, 1849, to his wife in Somerville, Massachusetts while he was on a voyage from Boston, Massachusetts to San Francisco, California in the brig Sea Eagle under the command of Captain Hammond. Bancroft Library, University of California, Berkeley, California, # C-D 608. These letters supplement and duplicate information in his journal.

McCrackan, John. Letters, 1849, to his mother and sisters in New Haven, Connecticut in which he described his voyage from New York, New York to San Francisco, California in the ship Balance under the command of Captain E. Washborn Ruggles. Bancroft Library, University of California, Berkeley, California, # C-B 444. Letters were written quite frequently and contain comments upon fellow passengers and crew members, extensive descriptions of bird and marine life, detailed accounts of life in the ship and the effect of weather on that life, and the long stay in Talcahuano. The voyage began April 1 and ended November 23, 1849. He noted that there were 73 people on board. That included the owners, Messrs. Brooks and Frye, who sold passage to San Francisco for $150.
