HULL (DD-350, built 1934), destroyer; front of envelope has no cachet; duplicate stamps on right feature portrait of Washington Irving, printed on stamp "UNITED STATES POSTAGE/ 1/ CENT/ WASHINGTON IRVING"; stamp postmarked "U.S.S./ JUL/ 6/ 1940/ HULL" and "NAVY YARD/ PUGET SOUND"; address typed on front "Bertha Thompson/ 234 Friend St./ Boston, - Mass."; stamped on back "SUNK". The U.S.S. HULL helped down several enemy planes during the attack on Pearl Harbor and suffered little damage (see correspondence file). |
