Description: Sheet music, "She Wanders by the Ocean"; sung by Mr. [John] Templeton (1812-1887) at the Public Concerts; written and composed by Joseph Philip Knight; dedicated to Miss Charlotte Kirk; published New York by Firth, Pond & Co., circa 1848-1853; engraved by G.W. Quidor; cover in various scrolls and typefaces; 4 pages. The performer who evidently popularized the song was John Templeton (1802-1886). J.P. Knight (1812-1887) was an American basso and composer. ‘She Wanders by the Ocean’ was evidently originally published as ‘The Fisher’s Wife’ (New York, 1837) but was popularly known by its first line, thus published as such in later eds. Whaleman George M. Jones transcribed a version of the lyrics under the title ‘The Fisherman’ in his journal aboard the bark WAVERLY of New Bedford, 1859-1863.
