Bradley (1857-1938) at age 19 painted in Hong Kong while on MARY WHITRIDGE; head and shoulders pose of Bradley, wearing formal dress including black coat and vest, dress white shirt and green ascot, green background possibly pre-painted; handwritten on back "EE Bradley/ Apr. 1876 Hong Kong" and "Ship Mary Whitridge/ April 1876"; printed on back "TAICHEONG/ PORTRIAT/ PAINTER/ HONG KONG". Painting was completed in Hong Kong, Bradley was there on a stopover. He served as a seaman on the MARY WHITRIDGE, which sailed from New York to Shanghai to Hong Kong to San Francisco to South America and back to New York. Many small cracks and some wearing of paint at the bottom, small hole in the canvas, lower left corner. Frame for painting, 2005.73.2. |
