Mears (1829-1899) during his travels as a shipmaster to the South Pacific; photograph of an original drawing, said to depict an portrait of a tattooed Marquesan chief (though, some facial markings look as though he could be an Australian Aborigine); printed on front "Mapiau - Cahuku."; handwritten on back "Marquisian/ Chief Tattooed"; printed on back "C.
