Langford who was a teacher aboard the vessel when it sank May 2, 1961; he used slides in this collection (2002.35.1-657) for lectures about the sinking. The following transcription is from Richard Langford Collection AV 193:2002-5,6: [TCR 01:44:16]: “That’s dockside at Curacao. In the Dutch West Indies. By law, all the buildings in Curacao have to look Dutch. That’s why it looks like you’re in Holland. We’re right there in the main passageway, where all the Shell Oil tankers come in with the crude from Venezuela. Venezuela’s just 20 miles down the street. And they come in there day and night, huge tankers coming by. So we had a front row seat.” |
