Description: 35mm color slide from voyage of brigantine ALBATROSS 1960-1961; photographed by Richard E. Langford who was a teacher aboard the vessel when it sank May 2, 1961; he used slides in this collection (2002.35.1-657) for lectures about the sinking. The following transcription is from Richard Langford Collection AV 193:2002-5,6: [TCR 01:27:31]: “These ladies are building a new road [Grenada]. See, they finished this part over in here [on the right side of screen] and they’re still working on this part [left side]. And the supervisor’s standing down here [toward rear]. And when I came off the ship I asked him, I said, “Why are all these ladies carrying just one shovelful of dirt at a time on their heads, on a board? Why don’t you get a bulldozer in here and you’d do the whole job in an hour and a half.” And he looked at me, he thought I was being a smart aleck, and finally he said, “My way, feed twenty women. Your way,all starve to death.”
