Langford who was a teacher aboard the vessel when it sank May 2, 1961; he used slides in this collection (2002.35.1-657) for lectures about the sinking. The following transcription is from Richard Langford Collection AV 193:2002-5,6: [TCR 01:20:41]: “[Background--Were they all good swimmers?] Yeah, and became so. I taught some of them to swim a little better than they could. The main thing was to teach them a little breathing--rhythmic breathing. They would try to swim with their head out of the water, and that was not easy to do very far. That’s Mike Schaill there on the right. He’ll be here to have lunch with me on Friday--that’s tomorrow, I guess.” |
