Langford who was a teacher aboard the vessel when it sank May 2, 1961; he used slides in this collection (2002.35.1-657) for lectures about the sinking. The following transcription is from Richard Langford Collection AV 193:2002-5,6: [TCR 01:20:22]: “All the boys had aqualungs--underwater diving apparatus--but they stopped using it after the first time or two, even though we had a shipboard compressor. More trouble than it was worth. The water was so clear they could swim in 30, 40 foot of water with just a mask and snorkel, and that was more convenient.” |
