Title: Cutaway model of whaling half brig VIOLA, made by Lloyd McCaffery, 1981 Accession Number: 1991.180.3.1 Category: MODELS - VESSELS - FULL Type: cutaway model Maker: McCaffery, Lloyd Place: Date: 1981 Materials: wood; metal; glass; textile Description: Model and case; full hull cutaway model of whaling half brig VIOLA; open on port side to reveal frames; starboard side copper-sheathed with black topsides; two rigged whaleboats on port davits, one on starboard, and one off stern; rigged without sails; six men on deck, one in foremast hoops; men working near cutting stage are making a ship model; glass base with beveled mirror below model; plaque mounted on case off bow reads "VIOLA/ BY LLOYD McCAFFERY/ scale 16'=1""; model made by modelmaker Lloyd McCaffery in 1981; drawer of case contains polymer vessel plan of VIOLA (91.180.3.2) and two pencil sketches by Lloyd McCaffery (91.180.3.3 and .3.4).
