Place: Date: 1892 Materials: oil paint; canvas; wood Description: Oil painting on canvas, port view of medium clipper ship BELLE OF THE SEA on starboard tack off coast. Ships in background left, lighthouse and land background right. Signed lower left "C. S. Raleigh./ 1892". Flies name pennant, US flag (w/27 stars), an answering pennant (red ground, 2 vertical white bars) and 3 number flags (horizontal bars blue white blue; vertical bars white red; white ground blue square center.) Back of canvas stenciled in red "WADSWORTH HOWLAND & CO/.....TON/ AND CHICAGO". Two stretcher bars stamped "PAT. OCT. 7. 84/ 36 INCH" and two stamped "PAT. OCT. 7. 84/ 26 INCH". (Built 1857, Marblehead, MA BY EWALL & DUTTON, 189:4 X 37:7 X 23:6, sold to Liverpool 1864 and renamed STRATHPEFFER.
