Description: Davis quadrant (backstaff), American, 1762. Ebony limbs, 30 deg. brace, boxwood, subdivided (lesser arch); 60 deg. brace, ebony, subdivided by 1 degree (greater arch). Main scale of 30 degrees arc divided in to 10' intervals; diagonal scale divided to 1'. Marked on 30 degree brace: "Made by Benjamin King in Newport Rhode Island 1762". Fancy ivory nameplate inlaid on upper limb marked: "Mr. Ionathan Delano". Diagonal scale on 30 deg. arc; declination table on reverse. Has three vanes: horizon vane of boxwood, original; sight vane, mahogany replacement; lens vane, mahogany replacement.
