Description: Photograph of vessels seen on the Cape Cod Canal. Taken by William H. Zerbe. View of tug towing three T. A. Scott Co. vessels, followed by a tug towing an unidentified three masted schooner. The T. A. Scott Co. was run out of New London, CT. American colonists proposed eliminating the dangerous ocean passage around Cape Cod, MA, as early as 1680. Finally, in 1907, the canal was dug, and opened July 29, 1914. It was only 15ft. deep and therefore restricted to smaller coastal, fishing and recreational vessels, and some coal barges under tow. In the 1930's the canal was widened and deepened just in time for WWII.
