Description: Oil painting by Antonio Jacobsen. Starboard view of the 3-masted auxiliary steamer CITY OF PARIS. The painting is signed in the lower left "A. Jacobsen 1889". The 560-foot Inman liner CITY OF PARIS was the height of transatlantic luxury and speed when she was launched at Glasgow, Scotland, in 1889. With accommodations for 540 passengers in first and second class and 725 in steerage, and powered by two triple-expansion steam engines, the ship made the crossing at twenty knots, winning the Blue Riband for transatlantic speed in 1889. The prolific Danish-born marine painter Antonio Jacobsen, who emigrated to New York in 1873, painted this portrait in 1889.
