Title: Tobacco box perpetual calendar by Pieter Holm, 1750 Accession Number: 1957.648 Category: INSTRUMENTS Type: tobacco box perpetual calendar Maker: Holm, Pieter Place: Netherlands Date: 1750 Materials: Description: Brass tobacco box with flat, hinged top and curved ends, c. 1750. Perpetual calendar, months of year, abbreviated, and number of days in each month etched on lid. At left, in circle, is crowned figure, with "Voor Christi" and number 45 under it. At right, crowned figure and date 1582 under it. Across back, two lines of Dutch and on bottom, a ship's speed table. 1497 under figure with calipers and sextant, or similar instrument. Rim of box has been broken off around left curved end. Around front and both ends a running border of swirls. Made by Pieter Holm (d. 1776), Amsterdam, a Swedish-born seaman, settled in Amsterdam c. 1750 and opened a navigation school. Figure over the date 1497 is believed to be Amerigo Vespucci.
