LEVIATHAN, (ex. VATERLAND). The poster text reads "The largest/ ship in the/ world/ S.S. LEVIATHAN/ United States Lines/ managing operators for/ UNITED STATES SHIPPING BOARD". The steamship LEVIATHAN (christened VATERLAND) was built by Blohm & Voss in Hamburg, Germany 1914. She was seized by U.S. in 1917, and converted to a troopship. In 1923 she was sold to United States Lines and reconditioned by the Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock Co., Newport News, Virginia. She was scrapped 1938. |
