Title: Tobacco box perpetual calendar, 1729 Accession Number: 1953.493 Category: INSTRUMENTS Type: tobacco box perpetual calendar Maker: Holm, Pieter Place: Netherlands, Amsterdam Date: 1729 Materials: brass Description: Brass tobacco box, oval, flat hinged top, made by Pieter Holm (d. 1776) of Amsterdam, 1729. Perpetual calendar engraved on lid. In circle at left is crowned figure labeled "Voor Chris/ -45-"; at right is figure wearing miter and date 1482. On bottom is ship's speed table. At one end is unidentified figure and date 1497; at opposite end is inscription in Dutch. Figure on right represents Pope Gregory XIII, who introduced our current calendar in 1582.
